Questions

# The things people actually ask us.

## What does “triple vetted talent” (3XV) mean?

A candidate who has proven themselves in three separate arenas rather than one: academic achievement, service in U.S. Special Operations, and a documented record of results in a civilian business role. Black Powder Search screens on all three at once, so an employer is hiring an operator who has already completed the transition to commercial work — not someone taking their first civilian job.

## What is the difference between retained and contingent search?

Retained search is an exclusive engagement with an upfront fee, used for senior or specialized roles. We work only with that client on that role and run a dedicated, exhaustive search. Contingent search carries no upfront cost and the fee is paid only when a candidate is placed; it suits mid- and lower-level positions, and the client may run several recruiting firms in parallel.

## Does Black Powder Search only place veterans into defense companies?

No. Open roles and recent placements span industrial services, data centers, defense technology, manufacturing, in functions including operations leadership, finance, engineering management, software and data engineering, and project management. The common thread is the caliber of the leader, not the sector.

## How are the candidate profiles on this site anonymized?

Published profiles describe capability and target role — branch, community, rank band, clearance, education, and a summary of commercial results since separating. They never carry a name, a current employer or a specific unit. Those details stay in our system and are shared only when both sides agree to an introduction.

## Do candidates consent to having a profile published?

Yes, explicitly and in writing, and we record when consent was given and how. Submitting the candidate form does not publish anything — a public profile only exists after a separate conversation. A candidate can have their profile removed at any time for any reason, and profiles come down automatically once someone is placed.

## What happens after a candidate is placed?

We stay engaged with both the employer and the placed candidate after the start date, for as long as it takes to make the hire sustainable. Post-placement support is part of every engagement rather than an add-on.

## How does a veteran join the Black Powder Search talent pool?

Start with the form on our veterans page, or apply through our candidate portal at https://recruitcrm.io/apply/17435185106750083930KPn. Current openings are listed at https://blackpowdersearch.com/jobs, and candidates are welcome to join the pool even when no posted role is an exact match — most of our placements are filled from the pool before a listing ever goes up.

## I am about to separate. Is Black Powder Search the right firm for me?

Probably not yet, and we will tell you so rather than string you along. Our standard includes a documented commercial record after service, so we are most useful to veterans who are some years past separation. A transition organization will serve you better at that stage — but we would still rather hear from you early, because being in the pool before you need it is how you end up first in line for a role that is never posted.

## What does an engagement look like from the employer side?

Three stages. First, an onboarding call with our COO and the lead recruiter to establish what the business actually needs, not just what the job description says. Second, sourcing and screening from the proprietary Special Operations veteran pool, which happens without pulling your team off their own work. Third, post-placement support for both sides of the hire.

## Who is Black Powder Search related to?

Black Powder Search is the executive search business within the Black Powder family of companies, alongside Black Powder Holdings and Black Powder Partners — purpose-driven companies investing in and supporting America's founder-owned infrastructure service businesses. When you engage us for a search, you are engaging Black Powder Search.
